A 19th Century Monumental Cobalt Blue Ground Royal Vienna Porcelain Covered Vase with Watteau Scenes. Marvel at the sheer magnificence of this very large, Monumental Royal Blue Ground Royal Vienna Porcelain Covered Vase, an exquisite masterpiece that will leave you in awe. The hand-painted Watteau Scenes on this vase depict a wonderful rural landscape that features a group of beautiful women in gorgeous gowns of burnt-orange, lavender, blue, white, pink, yellow, and apricot. The women are surrounded by a pastoral landscape and a lovely old tree painted realistically with twisted branches, where a cute plump cherub sits on one of the branches and looks down at the dynamic and festive looking women. Two of the women hold a lovely garland of pastel colored flowers, while the others swoon around or perch, leaning on a sweet-looking, doe-eyed white and grey cow that is lying on the ground seemingly enjoying the interaction as it twists its head around to lick its left leg. The foreground of the scene is adorned with detail that creates a sense of depth and perspective. The blue sky and puffy afternoon clouds surrounding the women add to the idyllic atmosphere of the painting. The vase's body is a beautiful deep shiny blue background with extensive delicate gilded decoration in a lace-like pattern surrounding the entire vase except for the painted scenes. Large Austrian Neoclassical style porcelain vases by Royal Vienna Austrian, Late 19th Century Height 98cm, diameter 32cm Crafted by the prestigious Royal Vienna Porcelain Manufactory, this exquisite pair of vases embodies the centuries-old tradition of European porcelain artistry. Designed in an elegant baluster form, each vase features a deep navy ground, providing a striking backdrop for the finely hand-painted historical tableaux. The slender necks are adorned with delicate gilded patterns, further enhanced by ribbon-tied accents and raised gilded jewels, a particularly coveted element in high-quality porcelain. Matching porcelain lids, crowned with a pinecone finial, complete the sophisticated design, while the spreading socle bases mirror the decorative motifs of the necks. The vases depict four significant historical events, masterfully reinterpreted from renowned artworks. One scene illustrates King Charles V liberating Christian slaves in Tunis, inspired by a 19th-century engraving by Nicaise de Keyser (Belgian, 1813-1887). Another portrays the Battle of Bouvines (1214), based on an 1827 painting by Horace Vernet (French, 1789-1863). The Austrian porcelain artists have reimagined these compositions with richer, more luminous colours, infusing the scenes with energy while softening their dramatic intensity. Supporting these vases are ornate porcelain plinths, decorated with oval cartouches featuring additional painted vignettes. The undersides of the lids are inscribed with the corresponding scene titles. These include: Der letzte Reichstag zu Warschau (The last parliament in Warsaw), Karl V als Befreier der christlichen Sklaven in Tunis (Charles V as liberator of the Christian slaves in Tunis), Cromwell verhindert die Verfolgung des Waldenser (Cromwell prevents the persecution of the Waldensians), Bataille de Bouvines (Battle of Bouvines). Each piece bears the blue ‘FD/ VIENNA / AUSTRIA’ mark for Franz Dörfl. With their grand proportions, historical depth, and remarkable artistic execution, this pair of vases is an extraordinary acquisition for any collector of fine European porcelain.

An important and extremely large pair of Magenta Ground Vienna Porcelain Exhibition vases. Austrian, circa 1900. Each vase with blue underglazed ‘Beehive’ mark to interior of neck. Each vase is finely painted with classical scenes to the front and allegorical scenes to the back on a rich magenta ground with gilt foliate decoration. The vases are mounted by extraordinary gilt handles headed by winged female masks to the sides and grotesque masks to the shoulders. The spreading necks decorated with Greek key decoration are surmounted by domed covers and the vases are raised on baluster form supports put down on drum bases finely painted with panels stylised arabesque. The Vienna Porcelain Manufactory was founded in 1718 only eight years after Johann Friedrich Bottger and Ehrenfried Walther von Tschirnhaus had succeeded in unearthing the secret of Porcelain Manufacture for August the Strong, Elector of Saxony. On May 25, 1718, Emperor Karl VI signed a "special privilege" awarding Claudius Innocentius du Paquier the exclusive right to produce porcelain in the Austrian crown lands. Production being almost exclusively for the imperial household and the court nobility. During the rococo era, Empress Maria Theresia placed the company under imperial ownership and it was during this period that the manufactory began to produce the famous rococo genre scenes after Watteau. Under the management of Conrad Sorgel von Sorgenthal, the Vienna Porcelain Manufactory achieved an international reputation for its neo-classical style. After the wars with France brought the manufactory to the brink of ruin, the Vienna Congress at the beginning of the Nineteenth Century gave porcelain from Vienna a renewed upswing.
