This is a highly decorative, ironstone, twin handled circular footed Bowl by John Ridgway, dating to the English William 1Vth period, circa 1835 . The bowl has been carefully hand-painted in bold colorful enamels with a chinoiserie pattern of three oriental people travelling on a boat, pattern number 5057. It is also richly hand gilded. John Ridgway operated at his father’s celebrated Cauldon Place works, Shelton, Hanley, England, between 1830-1856, producing some fine porcelain and stone China of excellent quality. His stone China earthenwares and ironstone wares are discussed on page 305 of Godden's Guide to Ironstone, Stone and Granite Wares written by Geoffrey Godden for the Antique Collectors Club. These are a very good pair of finely hand enameled, Mason’s ironstone plates produced at the time when Mason's was owned and controlled by George L Ashworth and Brothers after the bankruptcy of C J Mason in 1848. Each plate is circular in shape and is decorated in one of Mason's most vividly colored and sought after chinoiserie patterns called "The flying bird" pattern, as documented on page 121 of; A Guide to Mason's Patent Ironstone Patterns, circa 1813-1848, published by The Masons Collectors' Club. The pattern would have been transfer printed then hand painted in bold enamels, with additional hand gilded detail. The colors of the hand enameling are particularly bold and bright on these plates, making them very decorative. The base of each plate carries one of the rarer marks with "Real Stone China...
