Feu de Joie 1970 hand signed and dated. Measurements: 25.75 X 25.75 Framed. Image is 23.75 X 23.75 Emilcar Similien, known as Simil was born in 1944 in St. Marc. He finished elementary school in St. Marc and high school in Port-au-Prince. From 1965 until 1971 he studied at the Academy of Beaux-Arts in Port-au-Prince, where he took courses in painting, sculpture, and art history. Simil uses his images of women only as means for displaying patterns, color, and the sparkle of gold jewelry on black skin. He paints with acrylics on Masonite of any size. His surfaces are smooth and polished. Simil delights in beauty, elegance, and grace. This is done in a silhouette style reminiscent of Kara Walker. Emilcar Simil (Similcar) is known for Acrylic painting in high colors of black skinned female figures. He is of the generation of Haitian artists that include Bernard Sejourne, Prospere Pierre-Louis, Levoy Exil, Louisiane Saint Fleurant, Henri Calixte, Paul Dieuseul, Laurent Casimir, Frantz Zephirin, Denis Smith, Philton Latortue, Philome Obin, Préfète Duffaut, Fernand Pierre, Dieudonne L Cedor. Since 1971 he has taught art history and aesthetics at the Academy of Beaux-Arts. He is also an honorary teacher at the private school Juan Vasquez. In 1974, he traveled to the United States to meet American artists and visit major museums. Simil was influenced by Art nouveau and his favorite artist, Gustav Klimt. These influences are most obvious in his paintings of women. Like Bernard Sejourne, Simil delights in beauty, elegance, and grace. But instead of concentrating on pose, he uses his images of women only as vehicles for displaying pattern, color, and the sparkle of gold jewelry on black skin. Only recognizable as females by their contours, their features are not distinguished. There is a playfulness of line that is very different from Sejourne's emphasis on monumentality. Emilcar Similien uses his images of women only as means for displaying patterns, color, and the sparkle of gold jewelry on black skin. He paints with acrylics on Masonite of any size. His surfaces are smooth and polished. Simil delights in beauty, elegance, and grace. He has been exhibiting since 1969 namely in Haiti, USA, Denmark. As Art Critic, Gerald Alexis states in his book Peintres Haitiens "well trained by masters who taught him to excel in his forms, Similien’s works also contain discrete messages” . Many artists cluster in "schools" of painting, such as the Cap-Haïtien school, which features depictions of daily life in the city, the Jacmel School, which reflects the steep mountains and bays of that coastal town, or the Saint-Soleil School. Centre d’Art, located in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, was founded in 1944 by American watercolorist DeWitt Peters and several prominent Haitians from the intellectual and cultural circles including: Maurice Borno, Andrée Malebranche, Albert Mangonès, Lucien Price, and Georges Remponeau. Popular artists of this movement include: André Pierre, Hector Hippolyte, Castera Bazile...

Kostacis with his hummingbirds Figurative popular scene in a Renaissance setting

By Igor Fomin

Located in Segovia, ES

Kostacis with his hummingbirds. Figurative popular scene in Renaissance atmosphere. Acrylic on canvas. Dimensions in centimeters 81 x 100 x 2 cm. Framed 105 x 124 x 5 cm. Dimensions In inches: 31.89 x 39.37 x 0.79 " . Framed 41.34 x 48.82 x 1.97 " Kostacis with his hummingbirds. Figurative Popular scene in Renaissance atmosphere. Acrylic on canvas. Outside scene where a group of people seem to experience extraordinary sensations surrounded by hummingbirds. In an urban environment with a Renaissance flair, the characters, dressed in original clothes of plural inspiration, seem to react ecstatically by the effects of the hummingbirds, which Kostacis seems to have under control with his wealthy and wise aura. The studied composition, the chromatic harmony, and the subtlety of the design of all the elements that make up the scene, give this painting a classic beauty. The author adds to all this his own brushstrokes of fine humor that wrap the whole theme in a casual irony, the same which surrounds all the stories that Igor Fomin...

The smokers. Figurative painting. Colorful Landscape with figures. Acrylic on canvas. Measurements in centimeters: 89 x 146 x 3 cm. / Framed: 114 x 171 x 5 cm. In inches: 35.04 x 57.48 x 1.18 ". / Framed: 44.88 x 67.32 x 1.9 " In the background, a beautiful city with classical buildings and a a forest; in the foreground, a small park where smokers gather next to the fountain crowned by a cupid holding a cigarette between his fingers. It is a group of six men and three women. They all smoke. They enjoy the smoke as they blow it out of their mouths, making shapes with it and interacting with each other in various poses. Hands emerge from the trees of the nearby forest holding lighted matches between their fingers as a lure to attract smokers to the darkness of the forest. A very dreamlike image to represent the temptation of the forbidden. ABOUT THE ARTIST Fomin is a storytelling artist. He is a storyteller in his everyday, anecdotally narrating the funny side of life, and he is a storyteller in his professional life, bringing to the canvas realistic popular scenes set in fairy-tale settings where the subject matter is always treated with irony and humor. The titles of his paintings tell us about eccentric characters of an era, a culture, a society (which one?) - it doesn't matter, it is a distorted reality with a romantic and sentimental touch, which takes us to references such as Brueghel the Elder, El Bosco and Chagall, within an aesthetic and chromatism typical of Renaissance painting where Fomin develops his original scenes playing with the design of spaces, landscapes, buildings, characters and costumes. A stage director who makes us smile, but also reflect on his original interpretation of the human being, because this is the main protagonist of his paintings. ABOUT THE ARTIST Igor Fomin...

Thota Vaikuntam - Telengana Pandit Acrylic on Canvas, 23 x 17.75 inches Thota Vaikuntam is one of the Greatest Artist from the Indian Sub-contitent. He is preoccupied with portraying the men and woman from his region. Thota Vaikuntam (born 1942) is an Indian Modern painter. His paintings capture simple lifestyle of villagers like the paddy fields, toddy pots on shoulders of men, the household chores, temple rituals etc. His drawings range from stark charcoal on paper, transparent washes and pencil drawings. Vaikuntam paints colorful and elaborately dressed Telangana region men and seductive women. His muse is the sensuous and voluptuous women of Telangana with their omnipresent vermilion bindis, draped in colourful sarees that highlight their dusky skin. The stylisation of a painting are a perfect foil to Indian classical dance as the figures seem to dance, as if following their creator in a statuesque movement, reminiscent of temple friezes. He uses the brightest of reds and yellows. The simple women become larger than life as they fill the small format of his paintings draped in bright Sircilla saris. "I like using rich primary colours, which give a sense of character and depth to my paintings. Like reds and saffron and even orange, because these are essentially Indian colours. I don't like using colours that are mix of two, because they are not natural, they don't exist in surroundings around us, in our everyday life. - T. Vaikuntam” Style : Men and women of his village are often the central characters of his work. The obsession can be traced back to his childhood, when he used to be fascinated by the male artists who used to impersonate female characters in the travelling theatre groups that performed in his village. He admits finding the women of his village very sensuous and that he only attempts to capture their vibrancy. Vaikuntam’s art has a sense of strength to it, a power that emanates from the paint or charcoal that he applies to the surface, from his controlled lines, and from the fine strokes that he executes. He generally uses only primary colours, as he believes that composite colours do not exist in nature and are therefore, unnatural. About the Artist : Born : 1942 in Boorugupali, Andhra Pradesh. Education : 1970 - T. Vaikuntam completed a Diploma in Painting at the College of Fine Arts and Architecture, Hyderabad. 1972 - Painting and Printmaking from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda. Solo Exhibition : 1973 - He held his first solo exhibition at the Kala Bhavan in Hyderabad and since then has had regular shows...
