Rowley Gallery Art Deco Pair Of Walnut Cloud Form Back Side Chairs 1930's

By Rowley Gallery

Located in Norwich, England

A pair of English Art Deco walnut side chairs with gold finished cloud-form back splats. Made by the Rowley Gallery. Maker's labels: "Modern Decoration, Rowley, Church St W8." Circa 1930's. The chairs are made of solid walnut and have wonderful cloud-form back splats, which are gold coloured leaf finish over gesso. There are some signs of use to the original finish, with water marks in places to the walnut frames. The gold coloured finish also shows nibbles and signs of use. The chairs have been waxed. The seats have be reupholstered and covered in Designer's Guild velvet - Trentino, in Raven colour. Both chairs are very sturdy with no loose joints. The Rowley Gallery was founded in 1898 by Albert James Rowley (1875-1944) and his wife Emma Hamm as a small business specialising in picture framing, mounting, restoration, carving, gilding and exhibitions of paintings. Rowley employed different artists to design for him, his most famous was Sir Frank Brangwyn. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, the Rowley Gallery became renowned for its inlay wood panels...

Rowley Gallery Intarsia Wood Panel Designed by Sir Frank Brangwyn

By Rowley Gallery

Located in Petworth, GB

The panel was exhibited by The Rowley Gallery in 1923 at The Cheltenham Municipal Art Gallery. It was listed in the catalogue at No 49 and priced at £52.10.00. Brangwyn’s fame was generally based on his genius as an artist rather than as a designer, but his decorative work included designs for carpets, pottery, light fittings, textiles, jewellery and furniture. The working relationship between Brangwyn and Rowley was long standing and can certainly be traced back to 1916 when the article regarding this panel appeared in ’The Studio Yearbook’. They collaborated many times over the years and together together they worked on an important commission to decorate the first-class dining room of the luxury liner “Empress of Britain” in 1931. In 1933 Brangwyn designed the frieze panels for the Rowley Gallery’s new ‘modernist’ shop in Kensington Church Street. The three life-sized carved wooden panels depicted carpenters at work. Sadly the premises were destroyed by an incendiary bomb in 1941, and although the panels were saved, they were later destroyed in a fire at the barn where they were being stored. Sir Frank Brangwyn was the most famous artist working with Albert James Rowley and certainly the panels he designed were the most expensive. The “Hollyhocks” screen is in the William Morris Gallery...
