Michael Kors Collection Fall 2013 runway finale dress — the closing look of the show, a striking example of the designer’s mastery of architectural eveningwear and American glamour. This piece dates to the height of Kors’s namesake Collection, the same period in which he served as creative director of Céline (1997–2004), when the Michael Kors runway sat squarely among the top tier of American eveningwear. The fitted bodice and underlayer are paved edge to edge in thousands of individually applied faceted crystals, cut in irregular, rock-like shapes and scattered for uneven, mineral brilliance under light. The weight of the embellishment is immediately evident in hand — roughly fifteen pounds — reflecting the couture level of labor required to execute a garment of this complexity. A dramatic black silk faille overskirt is sculpted into an exaggerated peplum before extending into a sweeping asymmetric train, transforming the silhouette with movement: short and architectural in front, a full sculptural sweep behind. This example corresponds to the look that closed the Michael Kors Fall 2013 runway, walked in the finale by Karlie Kloss — singled out by press at the time as the collection’s most likely red-carpet piece, a prediction borne out weeks later when actress Cody Horn wore the gown to the 2013 CFDA Fashion Awards at Lincoln Center. The garment carries the Michael Kors house label only, with no retail size or fiber-content labels, consistent with showroom or runway production. No comparable example is currently or historically available on the secondary market — including the open-resale platforms where this house’s commercial pieces circulate freely. The finale construction simply does not surface.
