About the Item

Tom Ford, for his first collection for French Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche for Spring/Summer 2001 while also Gucci Creative Director, debuted this tuxedo-style black virgin-wool leather-trimmed evening suit. Its midi-skirt uniquely features L-shaped cut-outs, which separate most of the waist and vertical panels with discreetly sexy quarter-inch-wide "sheer seams" of black organza. Such linear motifs were clearly inspired by the shiny reflection of tuxedo-trouser satin stripes or the dark seams on formal sheer stockings. Notably, the side-zipped lined skirt can be worn with its peak-a-boo seams along the front or back of the legs--either with no undergarment to reveal skin, or for more obvious contrast with colorful tights such as white or red. Please note that our mannequin does not have full legs, so the sheer cut-outs appear mostly black in our photos. For a better sense of how the invisibly-buttoned jacket can distinctly drape from the chest when worn by a woman, see our photos of some of the collection's runway models with similar ones either closed or open, and otherwise collar up. Notably, our jacket in white was part of the Parisian show's opening Look. While maintaining the powerful feminine look that Saint Laurent introduced in his 1966 collection, Ford reinterpreted some of "Le Smoking" elements. For example, he refined the Frenchman's then-shocking transparent blouse down to the understated see-through skirt seams that reveal only a surprising glimpse of the legs and hips. Other purely-Ford details are the substitution of tuxedo-style satin accents with repeated L-shaped trim in shiny Italian calfskin leather throughout the dinner jacket, such as on the luxurious split cuffs, interior vent and waistband. The additional fine tailoring on the jacket includes notched lapels, angled breast pocket, piped front flap pockets (with uncut temporarily-sewn seals), shoulder pads, and topstitching that narrowly defines the single-breasted waist between torso tucks. The ample French-size 36 could be worn by larger sizes, while we think it will best suit a U.S-size 6. The Ford-designed ready-to-wear collection marked the turning-point for French founder Yves Saint Laurent (1936-2008), when he planned to retire with a final haute-couture collection in Spring 2002 after he sold his Parisian fashion-house to luxury conglomerates, which named Ford (b. 1961) its creative director by 1999. Crystalizing the iconic brand's sex appeal with his inaugural collection, Ford presented tuxedo-inspired womenswear in only black and white for the fashion show. Ensembles like this made-in-France skirt suit enabled Ford to win the Council Of Fashion Designers of America Womenswear Award for 2001 Designer of the Year, while he had also created Italian collections for Gucci where he had gained fame over the decade. Of note, the departing French founder was not enthusiastic about the replacement designer's meteoric creative impact, which Vogue reported turned "the near-bankrupt brand into a multibillion-dollar powerhouse." Since Tom Ford's last womenswear collection for Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche in Fall/Winter 2004, he founded his eponymous luxury brand, while his multidisciplinary creative achievements continue to be recognized with major industry awards and honors.

Gucci Tom Ford AwardYear Lambskin Leather TuxedoPeakLapel Ecru Jacket SS 2001

Tom Ford for his Gucci Spring/Summer 2001 collection toyed with the mid-century concept of nude sex-appeal embodied by the initial Playboy-bombshell Marilyn Monroe, who inspired that season's designs and ad campaign. With the themes of bare skin and black-seamed sheer stockings, Ford's opening looks on his fashion-show runway featured ecru corset dresses with black transparent or leather overlays and stiletto heels. Our versatile ecru leather tuxedo-influenced sharp-shoulder dinner jacket is from the same award-winning collection. Significantly, 2001 was the year that Tom Ford (b. 1961) won the Council of Fashion Designers of America womenswear award for Designer of the Year, while The Met acquired Ford's signature corset dress for its Costume Institute collection. Purchased at the Gucci boutique on Manhattan's Upper East Side, this "Made In Italy"-labeled jacket is tagged size 40, while suiting a US-size 4 to 6 with the padded shoulder-to-shoulder seam measurement of 15.4 inches and 23.6 inches arm length. The jacket is streamlined by marked and angled peak lapels, sleeve vents with concealed buttons, back symmetrical vent, and single-point closure near the interior seam via a tiny Gucci branded silver-tone metal clasp. Notably, these elements are among the most technically challenging to tailor. Fully lined in ecru silk-blend fabric, the jacket's left interior chest pocket sports button-and-fabric-loop closure and a fully sewn larger black Gucci brand label. For styling inspiration, we added photos of the jacket worn over our not-included black-tulle-covered ecru strapless balconette corset dress, which was the Gucci Spring/Summer 2001 fashion...
