About the Item

This small porcelain object is a scale weight from the late Ming-dynasty (1368-1644), a dense counterweight for a tabletop balances used by merchants to parcel out spices, opium or other valuable goods. Sculpted to the drum-form shape of traditional garden stools, the ceramic weight is glazed in the blue-and-white manner, hand-painted with abstract brushwork and the fú (福) character for good fortune.
