About the Item

A large armorial porcelain plate decorated in underglaze blue. The central theme features a bird perched on a rock, surrounded by blooming peonies. The rim and part of the well are decorated with four large open lotus flowers, stylized plant scrolls, and three quatrefoil reserves, also featuring stylized plant motifs. At the top, the coat of arms of the Pelgrom family is painted, surmounted by a crest and the figure of a Chinese man. This plate is part of a service commissioned by Jacob Pelgrom, a French Huguenot who fled to the Netherlands in 1688 and, in the same year, traveled to Batavia as a merchant. He eventually became Director-General of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). He was appointed Director-General of Bengal in 1701 and Director of the Fiscal Department in Batavia in 1707, where he passed away in 1713. Several plates from this service are preserved at the Topkapi Saray in Istanbul.
