About the Item

Made circa 1880, this pair of Chinese Late Qing Dynasty blue and white porcelain vases has the scale, symmetry, and decorative presence that make a pair especially desirable. The vases are rouleau shaped and hand painted with an all-around cobalt-blue scene of songbirds and foliage. The shoulders are decorated with a diaper-pattern ground enclosing circular floral reserves. The necks have traditional stiff leaf decoration. Each vase stands 15.5 inches tall, a substantial size for display, and both remain in excellent condition. The decoration is beautifully organized, with birds perched among flowering branches across the bodies, broad cobalt borders at the foot, and layered geometric and leaf-pattern bands rising through the shoulder and neck. The cobalt has a lively, confident quality, moving from deep blue outlines to softer washes in the birds, leaves, and branches. That variation gives the decoration both crispness and depth. Additional value rests on the fact that these are a true pair. The slight differences in the painted scenes give each vase its own character. This combination of naturalistic painting and disciplined blue and white patterning makes the pair especially effective on a mantel, console, or large piece of furniture.
