About the Item

This elegant Japanese lacquer bowl dates to the late Edo period (19th century) and is distinguished by its refined arabesque (karakusa) design. The flowing vegetal scrollwork, executed with confident rhythm, reflects a classical decorative vocabulary widely favored in refined domestic and ceremonial contexts of the period. The bowl is fitted with a metal rim, both reinforcing the form and providing a subtle visual contrast to the warm lacquer surface. Such metal mounts were often used to enhance durability while elevating the overall aesthetic presence of lacquer wares intended for regular use. The piece retains a pleasing, well-aged surface with a soft sheen.
