About the Item

This magnificent hibachi (charcoal brazier), likely custom-made to order, exemplifies the pinnacle of Japanese lacquer artistry of the 19th century. Carved from solid wood with a rich natural grain, the surface is adorned with an exquisite maki-e (蒔絵) decoration depicting large blooming poppies, their petals rendered in brilliant gold and delicate silver powders.
