About the Item

A fine and beautifully enameled Chinese cloisonne incense burner, censer, with pierced cover, mid 20th century, circa 1960's, China. The censer with an oval lobed body supported by four elegant splayed legs. A pair of handles rise from the shoulders, mimicking the lobed shape of the body, as well as the splayed legs. The handles attached to the neck by a pair of stylized coins. The domed and lobed cover with gilt and pierced cartouches featuring confronting bats flying amongst clouds, and topped with a knob finial. Bats are auspicious animals in Chinese culture, as the word for bat (fu) is a homophone for the word for good fortune (fu). The censer with a bright turquoise enamel ground and decorated with a dense field of stylized lotus blossoms and scrolling vines and leaves in various shades of pink, red, blue, yellow and green. A delicate ruyi border graces the neck under a painted and gilt enamel leiwen rimmed border. The underside with a magnificent large stylized pink peony blossom.
