About the Item

An extraordinary antique Moroccan hand-crafted brass tea kettle or water vessel presented on its original tall warming stand, remarkable for its monumental 44-inch overall height, elaborate hand-engraved decoration and highly sculptural silhouette. The ensemble is composed of a large spherical brass kettle elevated on an exceptionally tall turned pedestal terminating in an elegant tripod base. Together, the vessel and stand create an imposing vertical composition that transforms an otherwise utilitarian form into a significant piece of decorative Islamic metalwork. The kettle itself measures approximately 12 inches in diameter and 18 inches across including the elongated spout. Its rounded body is extensively decorated with finely worked bands of traditional Moorish floral, foliate and geometric ornament, executed through hand chasing and engraving. Repeating borders encircle the vessel, emphasizing its spherical architecture and demonstrating the considerable amount of handwork involved in its production. A fitted domed lid rises to a turned finial, while the dramatic elongated spout curves upward from the body in a graceful, almost bird-like profile. The elevated overhead handle is similarly ornamented and provides a strong architectural counterpoint to the rounded vessel beneath. Particularly interesting is the lower portion of the kettle, which incorporates decorative pierced elements. The vessel is supported above a long, finely turned brass standard ornamented with alternating ribbed and engraved sections. The stand terminates in an elaborate three-legged base, with scrolling supports, small finials and shaped feet. A burner or warming element is positioned beneath the kettle, indicating that the ensemble was conceived not merely as a freestanding vessel but as a complete serving or warming apparatus. The entire composition displays the visual vocabulary associated with traditional Moroccan and North African Islamic metalwork: intricate surface ornament, geometric repetition, arabesque-inspired decoration and the transformation of functional household forms into objects of considerable artistic presence. At approximately 44 inches high, this is an unusually large example. Today it functions particularly well as a freestanding decorative sculpture in an entrance hall, library, dining room or collector's interior. Its tall narrow proportions also make it particularly effective in a contemporary setting, where the warm aged brass can provide contrast against limestone, travertine, plaster or dark wood. The brass retains an attractive naturally aged patina, with variations in tone, oxidation and surface wear consistent with age and use. I would resist aggressively polishing the piece; the existing patina contributes considerably to its character and helps articulate the engraved decoration. A striking large-scale example of Moroccan decorative metalwork, combining an elaborately engraved brass kettle with its tall sculptural pedestal and warming stand. The piece is unmarked, and no attribution to a specific maker or workshop is made. A rare, large-scale example of Moroccan Islamic decorative metalwork, combining an engraved brass kettle, sculptural pedestal and warming stand into a single dramatic presentation piece.
