About the Item

This unusual bronze charm is the handle of a 19th-century ritual bell known as drilbu or ghanta, a ceremonial instrument that accompanies the dorje scepter in Tibetan Buddhist rituals. Together with the dorje, these tools symbolize the path to enlightenment and the inextricable nature of wisdom and compassion. Softly burnished to a glowing gold, the fragment is cast with intricate designs that further its symbolic meaning. Lotus flowers symbolize perfection and enlightenment, while a human face on the handle depicts Prajnaparamita, the embodiment of transcendental knowledge. Each of the prongs at the end of the handle emerge from the mouth of a makara, a chimeric sea creature that symbolizes strength and tenacity. From the collection of Frances and Gary Comer.
