About the Item

A large Japanese six-panel folding screen (byōbu) depicting a pair of peacocks within an expansive landscape of flowering plum, peonies, bamboo, rocks, and smaller birds. The composition unfolds continuously across the six panels. A mature plum tree extends its twisting branches through the upper portion of the screen, while richly colored peonies and angular rock formations anchor the landscape below. Two peacocks occupy the center of the composition, accompanied by small birds perched among the branches and in flight. Particularly appealing is the contrast between the freely brushed trunks and rocks and the more carefully articulated birds and flowers. The plum branches are rendered with bold, abbreviated strokes, while the plum blossoms, peonies, and plumage of the peacocks retain finely observed details. The painting is executed in ink and mineral pigments on a gold-toned ground that has developed a warm, softly varied surface with age. Areas of open ground between the principal motifs give the large composition a sense of depth and allow the individual elements to remain clearly defined despite the richness of the subject. The combination of peacocks, flowering plum, peonies, and bamboo belongs to the established vocabulary of Japanese decorative painting, bringing together motifs traditionally associated with beauty, resilience, prosperity, and longevity. The screen retains an attractive antique character, with the aged surface contributing considerable depth to the overall composition. Edo period, Japan.
