About the Item

An exceptionally detailed mid-20th-century Tibetan Buddhist thangka depicting Kalachakra in union with his consort, stated to have been found at Shechen Monastery in Tibet. Entirely hand-painted on canvas using traditional rock and mineral pigments, the work presents the multi-armed Kalachakra as the commanding central figure, embracing his consort within an elaborate sacred landscape. The principal composition is surrounded by a series of smaller Buddhist deities and teachers, each contained within individual aureoles and arranged symmetrically around the central image. Kalachakra, meaning “Wheel of Time,” occupies an important position within Vajrayana Buddhism. The Kalachakra teachings encompass interconnected concepts of time, cosmology, the human body and the path toward enlightenment. In this form, the deity is represented in yab-yum, or sacred union, an important tantric image symbolizing the inseparability of complementary enlightened principles, particularly wisdom and compassionate method. The elaborate iconography is matched by an exceptionally rich decorative treatment. The central figures are surrounded by lotus blossoms, stylized trees, mountains, flowing water and intricate architectural and ornamental elements. The dark ground provides a dramatic contrast to the extensive gold, ivory, pink, blue and green detailing. A particularly impressive feature is the painted outer border, incorporating dragons, Buddhist emblems, floral ornament and geometric motifs, effectively creating an integral painted frame around the devotional scene. Thangkas of this type traditionally served as visual aids for meditation, initiation and advanced Buddhist practice. The complexity of the subject and the remarkable density of hand-painted detail make this a particularly decorative example of 20th-century Tibetan Buddhist art.
