About the Item

A two-fold lacquer screen carved with an abstract, geometric design in black, red, yellow, blue and gold by Imai Eiko (act. late 20th-early 21st century). Japan, 20th century. Signed Ei to the lower right. One of the few women working prominently in the field during her time, Imai Eiko brought a distinctive voice to contemporary lacquer. Her work reveals a refined attention to colour and surface, often exploring the tension between fragility and permanence. In 1985, she exhibited at the Nitten (The Japan Fine Art Exhibition), an important platform for contemporary Japanese artists and later served as a juror for the 47th Nihon Kogei Bijutsu (Japan Contemporary Arts and Crafts Exhibition) in 2008. Imai’s work combines traditional lacquer techniques with striking modern designs, bridging tradition and modernity.
