About the Item

Antique Japanese Wood Miniature Mask Netsuke, an unsigned work depicting Hannya, the female horned demon popular in Noh performance plays, a solid hardwood piece carved in high relief as a miniature mask having pierced pupils and an open mouth bearing the teeth. A solid cross strut is part of the backside where the himotoshi is a hole pierced behind this cross stretcher. The front surface in Saishiki-bori, a painting technique on carved wood consisting of a gesso covering in the low areas with the wood grain showing through on the high areas with a stained finish overall. This technique was characteristically used by the 18th century netsuke artist Yoshimura Shuzan. Signs of wear and age, otherwise fine condition. 1-1/2 in. high x 1-1/8 in. wide x 7/8 in. deep (3.8 x 2.9 x 2.3 cm). 0.1 oz. (4g.). 19th Century.
