About the Item

Chinese Cinnabar Lacquer Floral-Shaped Tray with Gilt Border, Qing Dynasty, 17th–18th Century An exceptional Chinese carved cinnabar lacquer tray of elegant floral form, dating from the late 17th to early 18th century. Richly carved in deep cinnabar-red lacquer and finished with an exquisitely decorated gilt border, this rare work exemplifies the refined artistry of early Qing Dynasty lacquer production. The tray is fashioned in a graceful multi-lobed floral outline, symbolizing harmony, beauty, and prosperity in Chinese decorative arts. Its central panel is intricately carved with a charming pastoral landscape featuring a scholar or noble figure leading an ox before a traditional thatched pavilion, framed by flowering plants, distant mountains, and a windswept pine tree. The idyllic composition evokes themes of tranquility, rural virtue, and harmony between humanity and nature—subjects deeply admired in Chinese literati culture. The background is enriched with meticulously carved geometric diaper patterns, creating a striking contrast with the raised pictorial scene. Surrounding the composition is an elegant border embellished with scrolling floral motifs, highlighted with original gold leaf, adding richness and visual sophistication to the already impressive carving. Carved cinnabar lacquer of this period was created by applying and painstakingly carving dozens, sometimes hundreds, of layers of lacquer to achieve remarkable depth and sculptural relief. Such objects were luxury works commissioned for the imperial court and wealthy scholars, admired not only for their decorative beauty but also for the extraordinary technical skill required to produce them. With its bold relief carving, rich patina, and beautifully preserved gilded border, this tray represents an outstanding example of early Qing lacquer craftsmanship and would make an important addition to a collection of Chinese lacquer, Asian decorative arts, or scholar's objects. Dimensions Diameter: 10.5 in. (26.7 cm) Depth: 1 in. (2.5 cm) Condition Very good antique condition with age-appropriate wear, minor rubbing, and small losses to the lacquer and gilt decoration consistent with over three centuries of age. The carving remains crisp and beautifully preserved, with an attractive natural patina. Provenance Private Collection. References Carved cinnabar lacquer reached its artistic peak during the Ming and early Qing dynasties, when master craftsmen developed extraordinarily intricate relief carving techniques using multiple layers of lacquer. Comparable examples are found in the collections of the Palace Museum, Beijing, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where they are celebrated among the finest achievements of Chinese decorative arts.
