About the Item

A beautiful standing Edo Period antique wood carved Japanese Kannon Bodhisattva Buddha Amida sculpture/statue. This Buddha is one of four we acquired that were rescued from an abandoned and closed Japanese Zen Buddhist temple. Meticulously hand carved with a gorgeous naturally aged patina. Gilded in gold leaf throughout. Standing on a wooden base and framed by a large carved halo/mandorla decorated with a cloud motif, the buddha gazes outward with narrowed eyes in deep meditation, his hands in the Buddhist Abhaya Mudra position offering a blessing of protection, reassurance, peace, and benevolence. This hand position, also known as the "fear not" gesture, was achieved by Buddha immediately following his enlightenment. Likely from the late Edo (1603-1868) period - early to mid-1800s but perhaps older. A rare and special work. Would be a wonderful addition to any Japanese or Asian Buddha or art/artifacts collection or make for an eye-catching stand-alone accent work in about any setting. Truly a special work. Dimensions: 17.25" high, 6" wide, 5" deep.
