About the Item

A finely cast mid-20th century Tibetan bronze figure of Vasudhara, the Buddhist goddess traditionally associated with wealth, prosperity, abundance and generosity. Vasudhara is an important female deity within Himalayan Buddhism and is particularly revered as a bestower of both material prosperity and spiritual abundance. Her role is sometimes compared with that of Lakshmi in Hindu tradition, although Vasudhara possesses her own distinctive Buddhist iconography and devotional significance. The goddess is represented in her characteristic multi-armed form, seated upon an elaborately modelled lotus pedestal. Her multiple arms convey the breadth of her benevolent activity, while the implements held in her hands symbolise prosperity, nourishment and the inexhaustible abundance of Buddhist teachings. Her lower right hand extends downward in varada mudra, the gesture of generosity and the granting of blessings. The remaining hands hold or originally held attributes associated with Vasudhara, including forms traditionally interpreted as a treasure vessel and sheaf of grain, symbols of material sustenance, fertility and spiritual nourishment. The figure is richly ornamented with an elaborate crown, jewellery and flowing decorative elements surrounding the body. The detailed lotus base and scrolling forms create an intricate sculptural silhouette, while the naturally aged bronze surface displays variations of dark and warm golden patination that emphasise the modelling. Within Buddhist tradition, Vasudhara represents more than material wealth alone. Her abundance encompasses generosity, knowledge, spiritual merit and the conditions necessary for individuals to pursue the Buddhist path. A nice vintage early to mid-20th century gilt bronze sculpture of the Buddhist deity Avalokiteshvara in his four armed form, known as Chaturbuhja, or Chenrezig in Tibet. Chenrezig, a form of Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion (known as Guan Yin or Kwan Yin in Chinese), sits in vajrasana upon a high double lotus pedestal. One pair of hands is clasped in prayer at heart level, the other pair of hands raised upwards at shoulder lever and holding discreet attributes, a mala (prayer beads) in one hand, a lotus blossom in the other. Chenrezig is dressed in an elaborately patterned floral dhoti that covers his lower half. His torso bare, shoulders covered with a shawl and scarves that billow out around him. He is festooned with jewels, necklaces, bracelets, armlets, earrings, belt and a five pointed crown. The earrings studded with coral. The crown studded with turquoise.
