About the Item

Originating from Kubutambahan in northern Bali, Indonesia, this extraordinary sculpture combines traditional Indonesian craftsmanship with a subject inspired by classical mythology. The composition depicts Neptune and his nymph intimately intertwined. Their expressive faces, flowing hair, hands and garments emerge organically from the dramatic natural contours of the wood. The nymph is shown embracing Neptune, while her rounded belly appears to suggest pregnancy, adding themes of fertility, love and creation to the composition. What makes this sculpture particularly remarkable is the way the unknown craftsman incorporated the original shape, knots, cavities and movement of the driftwood into the design. Rather than removing these natural characteristics, they became an essential part of the sculpture. Highly detailed figurative carving gradually transitions into untouched and naturally weathered areas of wood, creating a fascinating dialogue between nature and craftsmanship. Measuring an impressive 265 cm (104.3 in.) in width, this is a true statement piece with an almost architectural presence. Its monumental proportions make it particularly suitable for a large private residence, entrance hall, hotel, restaurant or other sophisticated interior where it can be displayed as a freestanding work of art. A unique example of early Indonesian decorative art, combining mythology, exceptional craftsmanship and the expressive beauty of naturally formed wood.
