17th century Antique stone temple fragment - OriginalBuddhas

Located in DEVENTER, NL

Unearth the ancient whispers of India’s sacred architecture with this Antique stone temple fragment, a 17th-century relic (or possibly older) that carries the spiritual essence and artistry of a bygone era. Carved from natural stone, this enigmatic fragment measures 27.9 cm high, 7.5 cm wide, and 23.2 cm deep, its weathered surfaces etched with traces of intricate motifs—perhaps floral patterns, divine figures, or celestial symbols—that once adorned a grand Hindu or Jain temple. Originating from India, where temple construction flourished under dynastic patronage, this piece reflects the mastery of stonemasons who transformed rugged stone into narratives of devotion, likely part of a pillar, frieze, or sanctum wall. Weighing 2.1 kgs, its compact yet evocative form bears the patina of centuries, with softened edges and mineral deposits that testify to exposure to the elements and ritual use. The fragment’s abstract geometry and symbolic carvings hint at its original context, whether depicting deities like Shiva, Vishnu, or Tirthankaras, or cosmic themes central to Indian spirituality. Created during a period of architectural splendor under empires like the Mughals or regional kingdoms, it bridges the tangible and the divine, offering a tactile link to India’s temple...

Chinese Ming Dynasty Bronze Nanhai Guanyin, 16th/17th Century, China

A decidingly charming Chinese polychromed and gilt cast bronze figure of Nanhai Guanyin, Guanyin of the South Sea, Ming Dynasty, 16th/17th century, China. Guanyin, the bodhisattva of compassion, is portrayed here as a beatific figure seated upon a raised lotus pedestal over waves. Guanyin is dressed in heavy robes, and wears an elaborate headdress. The small figure of Amitabha Buddha in the headdress positively identifies this figure as Guanyin. Guanyin rests one hand in his lap, holding a cup of pure water said to be able to alleviate all suffering. His other hand is raised, holding a willow branch which is used to sprinkle the healing waters. The two lotus blossoms to either side of Guanyin would originally have supported figures of the acolytes...

Rare Chinese Parcel-Gilt Bronze Figure of Lu Dongbin, Ming ca. 1600
Rare Chinese Parcel-Gilt Bronze Figure of Lu Dongbin, Ming ca. 1600

Rare Chinese Parcel-Gilt Bronze Figure of Lu Dongbin, Ming ca. 1600

Located in Nottingham, GB

From the Ming dynasty onwards, bronze figures of Daoist deities and immortals occupied an important place within the domestic interior. They appeared on household altars, scholar's desks, incense burners and ritual stands, serving both devotional and decorative purposes. Parcel gilding was frequently applied to emphasise significant details, creating a striking interplay between brilliant gold highlights and the darker bronze beneath. Among the most revered subjects were the Eight Immortals, whose distinctive attributes made them immediately recognisable and whose presence conveyed blessings of longevity, protection and prosperity. This finely cast figure represents Lu Dongbin, the scholar-swordsman and perhaps the most celebrated of the Eight Immortals. Associated with wisdom, self-cultivation and the triumph of virtue over temptation, Lu Dongbin remains one of the most enduring figures in Daoist tradition. He is depicted seated in a contemplative pose, his ample robes gathered around him in deeply modelled folds that pool gracefully at the front of the composition. The torso leans slightly forward, lending the figure an engaging sense of immediacy and introspection. His hair is arranged in a high topknot, while a long flowing beard, articulated with finely incised striations, frames a dignified and authoritative expression. Held delicately in his left hand is a rolled scroll, an attribute that reflects his scholarly nature and distinguishes him within the Daoist pantheon. His right hand is concealed within the sleeve of his robe in a gesture of restraint and quiet composure.
