About the Item

This vintage West African fabric is handwoven cotton dyed with vegetable dyes and decorated with embroidery and cowrie shells. It is likely to be from the Marino Dogon people. The geometric lines and diamond patterns are thought to symbolically represent a cosmology, ancestor worship, and a connection to the earth, and are characterized by a composition that is both decorative and imbued with spiritual and ritual significance. Cowrie shells are a material that has been used in this region as currency, amulets, and symbols of authority, and it is thought that they were sewn on as a symbolic element that goes beyond mere decoration. Decorative stitching is prominent among the Dogon and Bambara cultural spheres. Repairs and traces of years of use can be seen everywhere, quietly testifying to a fabric that has been passed down along with the memories of specific rituals and communities.
