About the Item

An exceptional large hand-embroidered and quilted silk textile from Rajasthan, India, dating to circa 1950. Measuring five feet in height, this richly worked panel presents a dramatic vertical composition combining Mughal-inspired ornament, Rajasthani textile traditions and the expressive character of Indian folk art. The textile is constructed from joined and quilted silk sections, arranged around a commanding central lozenge-shaped medallion. Layers of geometric stitching radiate outward from the center, framed by diagonal embroidered bands and triangular fields positioned above and below. The composition is enclosed by multiple decorative borders filled with stylized flowers, leaves and traditional paisley or boteh motifs. Its beautifully aged palette combines deep crimson, ruby red, muted rose, warm copper brown, maroon, cream and touches of emerald and olive green. Dense gold-toned metallic-thread embroidery adds dimension and a subtle reflective quality throughout the surface. Sequins and small pearl or bead accents introduce additional texture, catching the light without diminishing the textile’s time-softened character. The elaborate design reflects the Mughal appreciation for symmetry, flowering vines, paisley forms and highly ordered ornamental surfaces. At the same time, the visible hand stitching, quilted construction and freely interpreted motifs give the textile the warmth and individuality associated with regional Rajasthani craftsmanship. Small variations in alignment, color and embroidery are integral to the handmade nature of the piece. A black textile backing and narrow dark outer binding provide structure and visually frame the richly colored embroidered surface. The backing also allows the panel to be professionally mounted for display while helping protect its delicate historic workmanship. Measuring 60 inches high by 38.5 inches wide and approximately 0.05 inch deep, this textile has enough presence to serve as a significant work of wall art. Its vertical proportions make it particularly effective above a console, between architectural openings, at the end of a hallway or within a double-height stairwell. It would complement Anglo-Indian, Moorish, Spanish Colonial, maximalist and collected contemporary interiors. Because of the age and intricacy of the embroidery, wall display is recommended rather than use as a functional bed covering. It may be hung unframed to emphasize its authentic textile character or professionally mounted in a shadow-box frame for additional protection. Display away from prolonged direct sunlight to help preserve the historic colors and fibers. Presented in good vintage condition with wear, gentle fading, surface variation and irregularities consistent with age, previous use and traditional hand production. These characteristics contribute to its authentic patina rather than detracting from its decorative impact. A highly individual example of mid-20th-century Indian textile artistry, combining monumental scale, intricate metallic embroidery and a richly layered geometric composition. Dimensions: 60 inches high × 38.5 inches wide × 0.05 inch deep. Origin: Rajasthan, India. Period: Mid-20th century, circa 1950. Materials: Silk, metallic thread, sequins, pearl or bead accents and linen backing.
