About the Item

This exceptionally long and finely detailed 19th-century Chinese silk panel (156 x 33 inches) is a brilliant example of Qing dynasty textile art. Executed entirely in silk, the piece serves as a "Huxi" or ceremonial hanging, designed to celebrate a major milestone such as a high-ranking birthday or a festive union. Narrative & Iconography The embroidery depicts a continuous scene of the Eight Immortals and other auspicious figures gathering in a celestial garden, rendered with masterful precision: Central Figures: The panel features a vibrant assembly of mythological figures, including Shoulao (the God of Longevity) with his prominent forehead and peach, accompanied by various immortals identified by their unique attributes like the flute, lotus, and ceremonial fan. Auspicious Garden: The figures traverse a garden landscape featuring a decorative bridge and "Scholars' Rocks." The scene is anchored by large pomegranate and peach trees, which in Chinese culture represent fertility and a long, healthy life. Upper Register: The top border contains a series of floating Buddhist and Daoist emblems, including the Conch Shell and the Butterfly, symbolizing spiritual harmony and joy. Finishing Details: The bottom is finished with a sophisticated green silk net valance featuring metallic sequins and an array of multicolored silk tassels, adding a ceremonial weight and decorative flair to the piece. Condition & Construction Material: Full silk embroidery on a rich red silk ground, utilizing various techniques including satin stitch, knotted stitch, and couched metallic threads for high-relief definition. Format: At 13 feet in length, this is a monumental piece that remains largely intact, offering a panoramic view of Chinese folk narrative. Condition Report: Good antique condition. The silk ground retains excellent color saturation. As with any 19th-century textile, minor surface wear, localized thread loss to the fine embroidery, and slight oxidation of the metallic sequins are present and consistent with its age.
