About the Item

The spectacular large mantel is constructed from white Carrara marble, featuring a rectangular top with a molded edge. The frieze is centered by a gilt bronze mount in the form of a ribbon-tied floral garland, flanked by gilt bronze beaded molding along the upper edge and floral end mounts above the jambs. The side supports are formed as fluted pilasters with large scroll corbels, each mounted with a gilt bronze laurel swag suspended from a roundel. The bases of the jambs are decorated with gilt bronze vertical foliate mounts above molded plinth blocks. This fireplace mantel is made in the Louis XVI style, popular in the late 18th and 19th centuries, and is constructed from fine Carrara marble with applied gilt bronze ornamentation. The mounts are crisply cast and chased, including the floral garland, laurel swags, beading, and acanthus rosettes, all retaining a bright gilded finish. The Louis XVI style is characterized by its neoclassical symmetry and use of architectural elements such as fluted pilasters and classical motifs. This example’s combination of Carrara marble and gilt bronze mounts reflects the refined taste and high-quality materials typical of the period’s decorative arts production.
