Monumental French Louis XIV Period Château Fireplace Dated 1712 with Latin Inscription and Louis XIII Influence. This monumental French château fireplace surround in sandstone, dated 1712, is far more than an antique architectural element — it is a rare historic statement piece. Carved into the original stone is the Latin inscription “SI DEUS PRO NOBIS QUIS CONTRA NOS” — If God is for us, who can be against us? — a quotation from Romans 8:31. Together with the carved date, it transforms the surround into a tangible witness to faith, protection and family life in an early eighteenth-century French château or manor house. The composition is exceptionally powerful. The lower surround has a broad, gently arched opening with layered mouldings and strong vertical jambs, creating an impressive architectural rhythm. Above it, the richly carved fronton adds a second visual level, with rectangular panels, large side volutes and a central inscription panel. The optional upper section continues the architectural story with a large sculptural panel, completing the presence of a full château fireplace ensemble — though the piece remains an extraordinary focal point on its own, with or without this upper level. The jambs are deliberately robust, almost architectural in their weight and depth. Their worn stone surfaces, historic tool marks and natural irregularities give the surround a sculptural presence that feels both noble and deeply authentic. The fronton, with its scrolling side elements and carved central text, adds a symbolic and decorative layer that makes this piece not only a fireplace surround, but an impressive work of art in its own right.
