About the Item

A handsome cast-iron fireback, of arched form, boldly moulded in high relief with an armorial cartouche beneath a crested helm and flanked by a pair of rampant lions, all set within scrolling foliate ornament. Retaining a richly aged surface with attractive oxidation and old wear consistent with use, the fireback displays particularly strong definition to the heraldic and decorative detail. Presented in good decorative order overall, with an old vertical crack through the lower section (as shown), typical of these working fireplace pieces. A characterful and highly decorative addition to a fireplace, equally effective displayed as wall-mounted architectural ironwork.
