About the Item

A superior George III cast and wrought iron 'hob' Fire Grate of classical design. The arched backplate with bold acanthus scroll supports, above pyramid capitals and uprights with spiralled pilasters and brass rope twist mounts raised on paw feet, the central section with conforming design and basket with bar and obelisk finials. All terminating on stepped plinths with sunken roller castors for easier movement. Circa 1810. An important piece of imposing proportions. In good original condition with no damage.  H: 98 cm (38 9/16") W: 104 cm (40 15/16") D: 44 cm (17 5/16") Provenance; from Red Lodge, Bristol. The Red Lodge Museum is a historic house museum in Bristol, England. The original building was Tudor/Elizabethan, and construction began in 1579–1580, possibly to the design of Sebastiano Serlio. The main additional building phases are from the 1730s and the early 19th century.
