About the Item

A 19th century Carrara marble bust of William Shakespeare. An instantly recognisable character presented in a well weathered condition. Reminiscent of the piece in the Garden of Worthies, this highly detailed piece was crafted in England circa 1850. Shakespeare is shown in period dress, seemingly blending elements from the Droeshout and Chandos portraits into his attire. The bust is wrapped in a robe, adding a Romanesque quality. The base was partially buried when discovered and the statue would best suit an outdoor position.
