About the Item

A pair of Directoire style wrought iron plant or candle stands offer lots of decorating options in a foyer or entryway, at the foot of a stairway or in a garden space. The stands are almost a perfect square with off white Travertine top shelves, circa mid-20th Century. The wrought iron stands are 54-inches high with X-side stretchers, ring turnings and splayed hoof feet. The Travertine is embellished with shell impressions, a coastal aesthetic. The stands reflect European--Italian Neoclassical taste.. The finish has acquired a lustrous patina over time. Each stand measures 54 inches tall, by 13.5 inches wide by 13.75 inches deep. They are elegant home furnishings, true to the Directoire or "Directory" style--the period from 1795-99 in France. The "Directory" style was not limited to furnishing. In fashion, it ushered in a mix of the ancient and contemporary. In furniture, a sparse approach dominated design with elongated simple shapes. This is also referred to as the neoclassical period, according to Encyclopedia Britannica and it was the last phase of Louis XVI style. This period was informed by Roman artifacts excavated from the ruins at Pompeii as well as Etruscan objects. This pair of stands is somewhat reminiscent of objects you might encounter in antiquity in a Roman or Greek villa setting. They are dramatic but quietly so. This is the sort of drama we can generally tolerate.

Condition:
Wear consistent with age and use. The stands are unique and in very nice vintage condition. They present well and are ready for installation. There is a small chip to the plaster of one of the tops that is approximately 2 inches wide on the side.
