About the Item

A good quality English leather, mahogany and brass-mounted waste paper basket, dating to the early 20th century, of tapering cylindrical form raised on short turned bun feet. The body is divided into paneled reserves of warm brown leather, framed by dark polished mahogany uprights and bordered with rows of brass upholstery studs, giving the piece the character of refined English library, club room or gentleman’s study furnishings. The upper register is carved with repeating fluted bands and stylized floral rosettes, while the vertical stiles are enriched with carved pendant leaf ornament, creating a decorative rhythm between leatherwork, cabinetry and brass-mounted detailing. The underside bears an impressed number, apparently “15329,” with a smaller, partially legible maker or retailer’s mark that may read “E. L. Ltd,” though the mark remains unidentified from my research. Measures: 16" h x 12.25" w.
