About the Item

An iconic, sculptural Mid-Century Modernist centerpiece bowl designed by the legendary American designer Ward Bennett, circa 1970. This highly recognizable form showcases Bennett's signature mastery of minimalist, geometric precision, featuring a perfectly rounded bulbous base that seamlessly pinches up into a striking, squared-off rim. This juxtaposition creates dramatic, crescent-shaped swoops on the sides, maximizing the interplay of light and shadow across its surfaces. Unsigned. The heavy, substantial bowl was masterfully manufactured from solid brass and originally finished with a thick layer of high-polished silver plating. While it is unsigned, the silhouette is an absolute signature Ward Bennett archetype. The bowl is offered in authentic vintage condition, showing an honest, extensive loss to the silver plate across the outer body. This wear beautifully exposes the warm, glowing brass beneath, creating a mesmerizing, two-tone "mixed metal" aesthetic that gives the piece an incredibly rich, wabi-sabi architectural character. A commanding decorative object, it serves as a stunning focal centerpiece on a brutalist credenza, dining table, or post-modern library shelf. Hailed by The New York Times as a designer who transformed the look of corporate and residential America, Ward Bennett was a true polymath whose career spanned interior design, furniture, textiles, and decorative arts. A self-taught genius who left school at age 13, Bennett studied fashion in Paris, worked with the pioneer modernist Constantin Brâncuși, and ultimately brought a clean, industrial, yet highly sensual refinement to post-war American design. Bennett’s design philosophy was rooted in absolute functionalism and the elimination of superfluous decoration. He spent his life scaling back objects to their barest structural truths. His metalware designs—most notably his highly collectible series of geometric brass and silver-plated bowls—are coveted by international collectors for their heavy material presence and architectural gravity. Today, Bennett's masterworks are immortalized in the permanent collections of elite cultural institutions worldwide, including The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.
