About the Item

A refined and richly detailed Chinese export porcelain punch bowl, Qianlong period (1735–1795), Qing Dynasty. Decorated in the famille-rose palette, the exterior features two large landscape cartouches depicting animated European-style hunt scenes, framed by scrolling foliage and set against a luminous white ground. The interior is centered with a roundel of a sportsman and hounds, enclosed within a lambrequin border that repeats along the inner rim. This bowl exemplifies the sophistication and cross-cultural appeal of Chinese export porcelain during the 18th century—a period when Chinese artisans at Jingdezhen, the imperial porcelain capital, were producing highly specialized wares for European markets. These objects combined centuries of technical mastery with motifs tailored to Western tastes, including heraldic arms, maritime scenes, and European leisure pursuits such as hunting. By the mid-1700s, Chinese export porcelain had become one of the most coveted luxury goods in Europe and colonial America. It not only furnished the great houses of Britain, France, and the Netherlands, but also profoundly shaped European decorative arts—spurring entire industries like Delftware, Meissen, and later English porcelain in response to the demand and aesthetics of Chinese models. This example, with its finely painted narrative scenes and architectural scale, is both a functional object and a document of global trade and aesthetic exchange. It has undergone museum-quality restoration to a small hairline, invisible to the eye; the glaze is fresh and the bowl rings clearly when tapped. An outstanding example of Qing dynasty export ware, marrying technical virtuosity with historical significance.

Antique 18th Century Chinese Export Porcelain Famille Rose Punch Bowl

This remarkable punch bowl is an exquisite example of Chinese export porcelain from the 18th century, made circa 1736 during the Qing Dynasty. Crafted for the European market, it exemplifies the refined artistry and technical mastery that made Chinese porcelain highly prized across the globe. The bowl is decorated in the Famille Rose palette, a style introduced in the early 18th century and characterized by its delicate pastel shades of pink, green, yellow, and blue. The exterior features carefully painted shaped panels, each illustrating detailed figural scenes rendered with great precision. These narrative vignettes depict figures in period attire engaged in daily and ceremonial activities, providing a rare glimpse into 18th century Chinese life as interpreted for European collectors. The decorative scenes are further elevated by raised gilt gold accents, applied with skill to highlight borders and motifs, enhancing both texture and visual depth. The punch bowl itself is expertly formed with a gently rounded body and slightly flared rim, creating an elegant silhouette that balances both form and function. Its surface is smooth and well-preserved, reflecting the high-quality porcelain and meticulous craftsmanship characteristic of mid-18th century Chinese export ware. Chinese Export Famille Rose Hundred Antiques Porcelain Bowl, Yongzheng-Qianlong

Chinese Export Famille Rose Hundred Antiques Porcelain Bowl, Yongzheng-Qianlong

Located in Downingtown, PA

A fine Chinese Export porcelain punch bowl, Yongzheng–early Qianlong period, circa 1735–1740, painted in the famille rose palette with a distinctive version of the "Hundred Antiques" theme, unusual for its focus on furniture and precious objects rather than figures. Around the exterior are ranged a canopied couch and red-lacquer scholar's stands set with vases, flowering branches, and jardinières of peonies, together with tables bearing brush pots, censers, and boxes — a catalogue of the furnishings and treasures of the cultivated Chinese interior, giving the bowl an almost interior-portrait quality. The interior is centered with a beribboned vase of flowers within a cell-diaper and floral-panel border. The famille rose palette — named for the opaque rose-pink enamel derived from colloidal gold, introduced in the 1720s — transformed export porcelain in the second quarter of the 18th century. Bowls of the 1730s such as this, painted at the transition from the Yongzheng to the Qianlong reign, are among the most delicately enamelled of all export wares. The "Hundred Antiques" was a favored auspicious theme, a gathering of objects emblematic of scholarship and good fortune; the present bowl's emphasis on domestic...
