About the Item

Monumental and bold, this Mid Century charger or low bowl was made by the Helré pottery works in Vallauris, the same small French town that is known for the Madoura pottery pieces designed by Pablo Picasso after World War II. This piece depicts a nude hunter with bow and arrow, shooting in the direction of a wild horse, both expressed in deep brown and black glazes on a ground of tan and pale rose. Surrounding both figures is a cluster of abstracted foliage forms in green and brown tones, Both the Helré and Madoura companies took advantage of the rich deposits of clay in the Vallauris district, their artistic wares reaching a high point in the 1950s and 1960s. The charger is well marked on the reverse.
