About the Item

An exceptional free-form Modernist centerpiece bowl designed and handcrafted by Los Castillo in Taxco, Mexico, one of the most celebrated names in twentieth-century Mexican silver design. Executed in silver-plated brass over copper, this sculptural vessel features a dramatic asymmetrical silhouette elevated on three spherical feet, while its undulating rim is meticulously inlaid with richly colored malachite and lapis lazuli, creating a striking contrast against the luminous silver-plated surface. Bearing the original workshop hallmark reading "Los Castillo Taxco, Plateado, Hecho en Mexico, Model No. 219," this rare design exemplifies the organic forms and bold material combinations that defined Mexican Modernism during the mid-century period. More than a functional object, it is a sculptural centerpiece equally suited for a dining table, cocktail table, or credenza. Founded by Antonio Castillo, Los Castillo emerged from the remarkable artistic legacy of William Spratling's influential Taxco workshop. Alongside contemporaries such as Margot de Taxco, Hector Aguilar, Antonio Pineda, Sigi Pineda, and Matilde Poulat, Los Castillo helped establish Taxco as the international center of modern Mexican silver design. The workshop became renowned for pushing traditional silversmithing beyond conventional forms by incorporating natural materials—including exotic woods, stone inlays, shell, and semi-precious minerals—into highly sculptural designs that remain sought after by collectors and interior designers alike. The fluid biomorphic silhouette reflects the influence of the Modernist movement of the 1950s and 1960s while remaining unmistakably Mexican in craftsmanship and artistic expression. The vibrant malachite and lapis lazuli border lends exceptional visual depth, making the bowl an ideal statement piece in both contemporary and mid-century interiors. Whether displayed as a sculptural object or used as an elegant centerpiece, this rare Los Castillo creation embodies the innovation, craftsmanship, and enduring appeal that have made Taxco silver among the most collectible decorative arts of the twentieth century. Dimensions Width: 17.75 in. Depth: 8.50 in. Height: 2.25 in. Condition Vintage condition with age-appropriate wear.
