About the Item

A rare quality French bronze pedestal tazza mounted with insects wading bird medallion by acclaimed French animalier sculptor Jules Moigniez (French, 1835-1894) and dating from the 19th century. Jules Moigniez was born at Senlis, Oise in France in 1835. He was the son of a metal gilder, and his father bought a foundry to cast his sculptures which was a great advantage to Moigniez who followed in his father’s footsteps. Moigniez studied sculpture under the tutelage of Paul Comoléra, a student of François Rude, in Paris. He himself was a bird specialist. Over the course of his 40-year sculpting career Moigniez exhibited thirty works at the Salon between 1855–92 and was known for the fine detail of his work. He was particularly popular in Britain where more than half of his work was sold however by the end of the 19th century, his sculpture had become popular in the United States as well. This stunning bronze tazza stands raised on a raised round platform pedestal base mounted in relied with three beetle-like insects set against a leaf patterned ground. A tall narrow stem supports a wide round tazza top with molded leaf patterns around the top of the stem. The tazza has a raised rim applied either side with a molded twig twin terminal handle and the centre mounted with a sculptural panel portraying a wading bird set amidst reeds. The design incorporates the signature J MOIGNIEZ. The tazza is not otherwise marked and has a wonderful rich natural aged patina and is an exceptional example of this highly accomplished sculptors work. Provenance: Acquired from the UK Art Market. In good condition with wear associated with age and use and with a wonderful natural aged patina.
