About the Item

A refined example of Italian Mid-Century Modern glassmaking, this parallelogram-form ashtray is crafted from solid violet amethyst crystal glass — tinted throughout the melt to achieve a rich, luminous color that shifts from pale lavender to deep purple depending on the light. The skewed rhomboid silhouette gives the piece a dynamic, gem-like presence that sets it apart from more conventional rectangular forms, and is particularly characteristic of the boldly geometric aesthetic cultivated by the leading Murano furnaces of the period. The heavily faceted exterior is the result of skilled cold-working, with each flat face ground and polished individually after cooling to create sharp geometric planes and brilliant optical clarity. This level of finishing distinguishes quality Murano studio production from lesser commercial work of the same era, and points toward workshops such as Seguso Vetri d'Arte or the Mandruzzato furnace, both of whom were known for their mastery of facet-cutting in colored crystal. The piece is a purpose-made smoking object rather than a repurposed bowl, confirmed by two finely polished corner cigarette rests integrated seamlessly into the design. At 13.5 cm in length and 427 grams, it has the satisfying weight and optical purity that reward handling as much as display. It works equally well today as a vide-poche, a desk object, or a standalone sculptural accent on a console or coffee table. In good vintage condition consistent with age and use. No chips, cracks, or repairs. The polished surfaces retain their full clarity and brilliance. Minor surface wear, i.e scratches, commensurate with a 50-plus year old glass object. Dimension: length 13.5cm/ 5 1/3", width 7 cm/ 2 3/4", depth 3.25 cm/ 1 1/4". Weight: 427 g/ 15 oz
