About the Item

Sabino Art Deco bowl, circa 1930, in opalescent molded glass with anemone decorations. Molded signature: Sabino France. Diameter: 30.7 cm Height: 8.5 kg Weight: 2.3 kg Marius-Ernest Sabino (1878-1961), son of a Sicilian woodcarver who arrived in France in 1882, studied woodcarving in Paris. His father encouraged him to pursue artistic training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Amazed by the novelty of electricity, he replaced his early wooden chandeliers with designs in which glass became the main element for diffusing light. After the First World War, he partnered with a glassmaker from Romilly-sur-Andelle and opened his own factory in Noisy-le-Sec. He had extensive stores in the Marais district of Paris. In the 1920s, his work expanded to include decorative objects: bowls, vases, ornaments, and figurines. His creations are similar in style to those of René Lalique. As a sculptor by training, playing with the relief of glass was of paramount importance in his research. He achieved notoriety in 1925 at the Salon International des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. This was his most productive year of creativity. The triumph of his chandeliers was part of the architectural lighting movement characteristic of the time. He designed the lighting decorations for the ocean liners "Ile de France" in 1927 and "Normandie" in 1935. He had sales outlets in Algiers, Oran, Tunis, and Constantinople. In 1936, he celebrated the lighting installation for the Shah of Persia Palace. He developed the use of a very thick opalized semi-crystal, which he combined with the molded glass technique and also used acid to polish the crystal. The result is a completely transparent light fixture with a play of materials between the polished and matte elements. Sometimes, a coloration of enamel or gold can be found in the mass. From 1925, Sabino preferred iridescent blue crystal, called "golden glass" in Great Britain. After 1930, Sabino extended the opalescent effect to include mauve, yellow, and smoky shades. After his death in 1961, his son continued the business until 1975, then sold a quantity of molds to an American firm.
