About the Item

A striking pair of Scandinavian modernist stoneware bowls, designed in 1974 by the Drejargruppen collective for Rörstrand, one of Sweden’s most storied ceramic manufacturers. These hand-thrown pieces exemplify the earthy elegance and graphic restraint of Nordic design in the mid-20th century. Each bowl features a speckled glaze with a soft gradient from warm taupe to pale ash, accented by a bold black swirl motif along the rim - an expressive gesture that nods to the studio's artisanal ethos. The larger bowl measures 30 cm in diameter, the smaller 17 cm, making them ideal for layered display or functional use in curated interiors. Both are signed on the underside: “R” Sweden Drejar Gruppen 1974 and “GM,” denoting Gösta Millberg - ceramist, porcelain decorator, and a key figure in the collective. Millberg’s work is celebrated for its synthesis of painterly detail and sculptural form, and these bowls reflect his refined sensibility. Perfect for collectors of Scandinavian ceramics, decorators seeking sculptural utility, or curators of postwar design. Rare to find as a matched set, especially with clear provenance and original markings. Dimensions: - Large bowl: Ø 30 cm - Small bowl: Ø 17 cm Marks: - “R” Sweden Drejar Gruppen 1974 - “GM” for Gösta Millberg In the 1960s, he was employed at Rörstrands Porslinsfabrik in Lidköping and eventually ended up in the factory's studio, where he became artistic director in the 1980s. The bowls are great as a piece of art, but you can also use them as a lovely fruit bowl, the larger one, and as a vide-poche, the smaller one.
