About the Item

Mid-20th Century Brazilian Bronze Souvenir Box with Inlaid Historic Coins by Alberti, Brazil, circa 1950s Dimensions: 2.5" Diameter x 1.25" H A finely crafted mid-century bronze souvenir box from Brazil, signed Alberti, featuring an inlaid composition of four authentic Brazilian coins spanning the early to mid-20th century. Compact in scale yet rich in cultural narrative, this round-lidded box was likely produced as a commemorative or diplomatic gift, encapsulating Brazil’s national identity and economic history in a refined keepsake format. Set within a soft black velvet lining, the embedded coins include: 1000 Réis (1927), framed by a laurel wreath 20 Centavos (1945) 10 Centavos (1948) A detailed map coin of Brazil, showing the nation's geographic profile in relief Each coin reflects a transitional period in Brazilian currency and governance—from the late Old Republic through the early Vargas era—making this piece both a decorative object and a miniature historical archive. The polished lid bears the maker’s mark “Alberti / Brazil,” likely referencing a mid-century atelier known for bronze and souvenir metalwork. The warm patina and solid construction give the piece a timeless, heirloom quality. Ideal as a desk accessory, gift box, or collector’s curio, this small bronze vessel bridges fine craftsmanship and national heritage with understated elegance.

Gorham Aesthetic Movement Sterling Mixed-Metal Box with Lizard and Mice, 1883

Gorham Aesthetic Movement Sterling Mixed-Metal Box with Lizard and Mice, 1883

By Gorham CO.

Located in West Palm Beach, FL

Gorham Aesthetic Movement Sterling Mixed-Metal Box with Lizard and Mice, 1883 Dimensions: 3.5" W × 2.5" D × 1.5" H Materials: Copper with applied silver decoration Marks: Gorham, date letter “P” for 1883 A finely crafted American Aesthetic Movement mixed-metal box by Gorham, executed in copper with sculptural silver appliqué. The domed lid features a dynamic lizard in high relief, accompanied by two playful mice in motion, all arranged above a silvered ground with grasses and textured earth. The decoration is set asymmetrically against the warm copper body, leaving generous areas of polished surface that highlight the contrast between metals. The interior is left plain, showing use consistent with age. The imagery reflects the strong influence of Japanese Meiji-era design on Gorham in the late 19th century. Themes of small animals and naturalistic vignettes were drawn directly from Japanese art, where lizards were regarded as symbols of protection and renewal, and mice were associated with quickness, fertility, and in some contexts, good fortune. Together, they create a whimsical narrative of pursuit, rendered with wit and naturalistic detail. This work exemplifies the Aesthetic Movement credo of “Art for Art’s Sake,” emphasizing beauty, asymmetry, and nature study over traditional allegory. Gorham’s mixed-metal line, developed in the wake of the 1876 Centennial Exposition, sought to rival Tiffany & Co. in innovation and design, producing decorative objects that were both functional and avant-garde.
