About the Item

19th Century Chinoiserie Sewing Box. Octagonal shaped box is hand-painted with intricate gilt decorated depicting Asian landscapes, figures, pavilions, and scrolling motifs against a black lacquered background. The hinged lid opens to reveal a removable fitted tray with divided compartments containing original carved accessories. The accessories include thread spools, clamps, and tools. Beneath this tray is a narrow pull-out drawer with additional compartments and a writing slope or work stand, designed to support sewing materials while in use. Brass carrying handles adorn each side of box, while ornate gilt paw feet elevate the box, lending it a refined furniture-like presence. No keys available with box. In modern interiors this remarkable box works equally well as a decorative object and practical storage piece. It is ideal to display of a coffee table, desk, or console as a conversation piece. It also can serve as a storage piece to store jewelry, watches, correspondence, photographs, or keepsakes. Additionally, the sewing box can always serve as its original purpose- as a sewing or embroidery box. This box can be incorporated into Chinoiserie, English Country, Traditional, or Eclectic interiors.
