About the Item

This is a very good quality English mid 19th C Victorian period box or document box with fine inlaid detail, having a hinged lid with a brass swan neck handle, dating to the mid/ early 19th Ca 1840. The box has a rectangular shape and has been beautifully handmade with much fine detail. The box is made of red walnut or a similar hardwood. All four sides have a satinwood strip to the base and around the top. The top also has a boxwood inlaid rectanle set in from the outside by about 0.75 inches. Additionally there is a shaped key hole escutcheon and in satinwood or boxwood. overall a quality piece. The box has a lid fitted with a cast brass swan-neck handle, brass hinges and brass lock. There is no lock key with this box. This box has developed a beautiful lustrous mellow color and patination to all its external surfaces, due to use, polishing and natural ageing over decades. The inside of the box is lined with a decorative green thick paper and the base shows appropriate wear. This item is very decorative and has many possible uses as a document, jewelry or small collectables or keepsake box. Overall a fine quality box.
