About the Item

French Ormolu Cartouche Box with Miniature Portrait of Princess de Lamballe, Signed, Paris, circa 1900 This refined French ormolu cartouche-shaped box dates to the Belle Époque, circa 1900, and reflects the period’s fascination with aristocratic portraiture and the romantic revival of figures associated with the ancien régime. The lid is centered with a finely executed hand-painted miniature portrait of Princess de Lamballe, presented under glass and signed by the artist at the lower edge—indicative of a trained Parisian miniaturist working in the late 19th century. Princess de Lamballe (1749–1792), born Marie Thérèse Louise of Savoy, was a close confidante of Queen Marie-Antoinette and served as Superintendent of the Queen’s Household. Celebrated in her lifetime for her gentleness, elegance, and loyalty, she became one of the most poignant symbols of aristocratic virtue following her brutal murder during the September Massacres of the French Revolution. By the late 19th century, her image enjoyed renewed popularity, embodying nostalgia for courtly refinement, feminine grace, and tragic romanticism—qualities much admired during the Belle Époque. The portrait depicts the princess in an idealized youthful guise, with softly powdered hair adorned by a floral garland, recalling 18th-century court portrait conventions. Surrounding the miniature, the ormolu mount is richly worked with scrolling foliage and floral motifs in low relief, blending Neoclassical symmetry with Rococo Revival exuberance. The cartouche form itself—associated with heraldry and courtly presentation—reinforces the object’s aristocratic associations. The interior is lined in velvet, suggesting use as a vanity, presentation, or keepsake box, intended for personal treasures rather than utilitarian storage. Such boxes were prized objets de vertu, often gifted or collected as intimate works of decorative art. Measuring approximately 3 inches wide, 3 inches deep, and 1.5 inches high, the box is in fine antique condition, with light wear consistent with age and careful handling. A sophisticated and evocative object, it bridges the elegance of pre-Revolutionary France with the Belle Époque’s reverence for history, sentiment, and exquisite craftsmanship—an exceptional addition to a collection of French decorative arts or portrait miniatures.
