FREE WORLDWIDE SHIPPING The Rosewood Writing Box by Taulin is a fine French example dating to the Louis Philippe I period, circa 1830. Finished in richly figured rosewood, the writing box is mounted throughout with thick brass edging and decorative brass stringing to the lid and front with geometric overlapping corners. The lid retains a vacant rectangular brass initial plaque framed within brass borders, while the front is fitted with a shaped brass escutcheon surrounding the barrel lock. The exterior is completed with a pair of flush mounted carry handles to each side. The interior is lined in mahogany and fitted with a black leather writing slope decorated with Greek key gold tooling and embossed borders. Both the upper and lower sections of the writing surface can be hinged upward to access additional storage compartments below. The upper section is arranged with five fitted compartments containing twin inkwells, a lined pen tray and two angled stamp compartments, one retaining its original fitted box. Beneath the upper section are two concealed secret compartments. The first is accessed by sliding the inner right wall upward to reveal a small aperture allowing the hidden fascia to be released, opening to reveal three drawers. The second secret compartment is activated by pressing the lower inner wall on the right hand side which releases a spring loaded panel concealing a further three hidden drawers. The writing box is signed below the pen tray with the maker’s mark for Taulin of Palais Royal.
