About the Item

At the first glance, this looks like an art piece done by a modern abstract artist - with the layers of random, thicker paint on it. But the truth is, this small box chest of drawers is called "Jouban", one of an essential tools of Japanese Urushi lacquer craftsmen. Manufactured circa 1910s to 1930s estimate from the style & conditions. Urushi lacquer craftsmen use the top panel as a work table, also mix the lacquers on it like a painter's palette, so they have to wipe the excessed lacquer everyday in the end of their work time since Urushi lacquer is easy to dry up. As a result, the top area has shine with nuanced depth coming from the countless thin layers of Urushi lacquer by the age. Especially, the top of this piece looks like the image of nebula on it - deep red Urushi lacquer from the deeper layers coming up and shines in the dark, sleek, silent space made of black Urushi lacquer. While the sides are covered with thicker layers of randomly dripped lacquers. This is truly one of a kind, wabi sabi art piece indeed, And additionally, the drawers open & close smoothly, durable enough as chest of drawers, for further use.
