About the Item

A beautiful Art Nouveau lidded pewter box with amazing patina. Handmade by the renowned Danish goldsmith Arent Dragsted in Copenhagen, Denmark, late 1800s. Great original condition, with some light scratches and scuffs. Impressed with makers mark. Arent Nicolai Dragsted (9 June 1821 – 15 August 1898) was one of the most distinguished Danish goldsmiths of the nineteenth century and the founder of the celebrated Copenhagen firm A. Dragsted, a name that would become synonymous with Danish luxury silver, jewelry, and courtly craftsmanship. Born in the town of Kerteminde on the island of Funen, Dragsted showed artistic talent from an early age and trained as a goldsmith before continuing his studies at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. His education combined traditional guild craftsmanship with academic design training, and he further broadened his skills through study journeys abroad, where he became acquainted with contemporary European trends in decorative arts and precious-metal work. In 1854 Dragsted established his own workshop in Copenhagen. The business quickly earned a reputation for exceptional workmanship, refined design, and the highest quality materials. Working during the flourishing period of Danish nineteenth-century art and design, Dragsted created silverware, jewelry, ceremonial objects, and presentation pieces that combined technical precision with elegant, often historically inspired forms. His workshop attracted a wealthy and discerning clientele and became one of the leading goldsmith establishments in Denmark. Dragsted was not only a successful craftsman but also an influential figure within his profession. He served as alderman of the Copenhagen Goldsmiths' Guild, helping to uphold professional standards and promote the status of Danish goldsmithing. Among his most famous works were the golden horn presented to the poet Bernhard Severin Ingemann and the golden wreath created for the sarcophagus of King Frederick VII, commissions that demonstrated the prestige he had achieved during his lifetime. Shortly before his death, Dragsted received the distinction of being appointed Purveyor to the Royal Danish Court, a recognition reserved for firms that supplied goods of outstanding quality to the monarchy. Under his leadership, A. Dragsted developed into one of Denmark's foremost luxury houses, and the company continued to flourish long after his death. Arent Nicolai Dragsted died in Copenhagen in 1898, leaving behind a legacy of remarkable craftsmanship and artistic excellence. Today, objects bearing the Dragsted name are highly regarded by collectors, museums, and historians as important examples of nineteenth-century Danish gold- and silversmithing, reflecting the combination of technical mastery, elegant design, and enduring quality that characterized his life's work.
