About the Item

A refined mid-19th century personal writing accessory, the rectangular case sheathed in richly mottled tortoiseshell veneer, its surface presenting a deep marbled pattern of honey and dark espresso tones laid over a slim wood or composition core. The lid is mounted on a diminutive hand-fitted hinge and opens to reveal a fitted interior lined in plush crimson velvet, the cavity sized for sealing wax, wafer or taper sticks used for correspondence. A small applied silvered push-button releases the lid, the clasp and hinge plates subtly inset so as not to interrupt the flowing shell surface. The form is slightly wedge-shaped in section, swelling fractionally toward the top, a subtle shaping often associated with English etuis and dressing-table accessories produced between 1830 and 1860, when tortoiseshell veneer was prized for its translucence and natural figuring. Its compact scale and elegant silhouette place it within the tradition of portable writing accoutrements carried in gentleman’s and lady’s travelling cases, writing slopes, and personal reticules. Measures: 3.625 inches high, 1.5 inches wide, .5 inches deep.
