About the Item

Early 19th century sea captain's tea caddy, circa 1830, made of coramandel wood gathered in the Spice Islands China Trade, with sailor's grommet-spliced rope becket handles. The interior divided into two covered tea compartments and a central chamber that would have held a glass mixing bowl. This is the only shipboard caddy I have ever seen. The caddy is in excellent condition, though one compartment lid in the interior has an old crack break and repair. The lacquered finish is strongly alligatored showing its age nicely. Measures: 7-1/2 in high x 13 in long x 6-1/2 in wide.
